  1. Name: Yuri Shimoda

  2. Year/progress in degree: Second year

  3. School and program: UCLA MLIS program

  4. Area of interest: Audio Archiving, Public Service

  5. Why did you choose librarianship as a career path? I felt that music librarianship was the best way for me to combine my love for and background in music with my passion for preserving legacy audio formats and my desire to help others.

  6. What is/was your favorite part about library school so far? My favorite course so far has been Audiovisual Archiving in the 21st Century, taught by the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive’s team of archivist-librarians. Our final project was creating a step-by-step plan on how to establish an AV archive, and it was a lot of fun.

  7. What has been your best experience as a member of MLA? Getting to know members at the Portland gathering!

  8. What advice would you give to a beginning library student? Be as open as possible. Even if you think you only want to do reference work, take a cataloging class. You might find that something you never thought you’d be interested in actually piques your interest.
